1.1 Classroom Navigation

Before you go on, it's important that you learn how to navigate within your

classroom.

General Navigation

Take a moment to look over the navigation area on the left-hand side of this page. You can use the links and pulldown menu here to navigate within your course.

Note: All screenshots (such as the image of the Course Units menu, below) are from a Macintosh computer. If you're using Windows, menus, dialog boxes, and windows may look different.

  • Each unit of a UC Berkeley Extension Online course can be accessed via the Course Units pulldown menu.

This sample classroom contains only two units, so you can choose only Units 1 or 2 from the menu. This is what the menu looks like:

  • You'll also find a toolbar containing Chat, Message Board, E-mail Your Instructor, and Help buttons at the top of every classroom screen. These tools are designed to facilitate interactions with your instructor, classmates, and UC Berkeley Extension Online staff.
  • The remainder of the screen is the content area, where you'll find all text, resources, charts, and graphics.

Lecture Navigation

In most classrooms, each unit's lecture section is divided into topics, which are designed to allow you to go through the lecture material in small sections. Most lectures contain between two and ten topics, depending upon the depth of the material.

Take a moment to examine the navigation aids that appear on each lecture topic page and allow you to move among topics.

  • The blue Back and Next navigation arrows at the bottom of the content area allow you to advance through the lecture one note at a time. The Top arrow allows you to jump back to the top of the page. The rectangular "stop" image indicates you're at the first or last topic in the lecture, if the image is on the left or right, respectively. Since this is the first page of the Unit 1 lecture, for example, the Back button doesn't appear below.
  • The Lecture Topics pulldown menu in the upper right corner of the content area allows you to jump to any lecture topic, which are numbered using this scheme:

    [unit #].[topic #]

For example, Unit 2, Lecture Topic 3 would be labeled Topic 2.3.

This is what the Lecture Topics menu for Unit 1 of this sample classroom looks like:

Lecture topic numbers and descriptions may also be listed on the unit's instructions page.

If you're unclear about the exact locations and functions of the links and menus, look at a labeled sample page.

Now, go on to the next lecture note by clicking on the blue Next arrow.
