Coursework

To find out what to do in each unit, read the "Instructions."

A unit will generally require you to:

  • read a selection from the text (On Time, On Budget);
  • review Web sites. Some will be for project management consulting organizations (with posted job openings!), and others will be related to the topic being covered;
  • answer review questions; and
  • participate in a class discussion on the Message Board.

In four of the units you will submit "projects" to me by e-mail. Each of these assignments covers a specific aspect of project management, and gives you hands-on practice in using the most important tools of the project manager. It's far better to make mistakes here with me than out there in front of customers.

E-mail Submissions

Written assignments should be professionally written, edited, and formatted. Whenever possible, type or copy/paste your work into the body of an e-mail message and send it to me at my e-mail address. This ensures that I will be able to read (and properly credit) your work. Please include your name and the assignment's unit number in the title of the e-mail so I can easily identify it.

If your work cannot be pasted into the body of an e-mail, you may save it as either an ASCII (plain text) or RTF (Rich Text Format) document and send it to us attached to an e-mail. I occasionally have trouble reading e-mail attachments because I cannot translate them. Please follow these rules when attaching:

  1. Do not attach more than one document to an e-mail message. If you have multiple documents to submit, attach them to separate e-mail messages.
  2. Save attachments as ASCII (plain text) or RTF (Rich Text Format). Your word processing program should, at least, let you save as plain text.
  3. Do not compress your attachments. I may not be able to decode your compression.

I may ask you to resend your attachment in a different format if I cannot read it. Please contact me if you need to make other arrangements.

Always keep a copy of your work in case a problem arises. Check returned evaluated assignments carefully, note all comments, and make the suggested corrections. This process will help prepare you for later assignments and for your future as a project manager.

Message Board

Discussions are conducted on the class Message Board. You can access your class Message Board by clicking the "Message Board" button along the top of any class screen. Throughout the course you will be asked to go to a Message Board topic, read the contributions of your classmates, and then post your own.
